Looks like Fort Fear has done it again, no time for anything besides Fort Fear. But, here it is Halloween and I’m completly spent. I have no energy for anything, yet my mind wonders and I’m thinking, “what can i throw together last minute for a costume” (and by last minute, I mean, in like 20 minutes.)

I wanted to pop on though, and post this song for the day… cause it fits.

We’ll I wouldnt go so far as to say we pulled it off with out a hitch, but we did pull it off… and we learned some lessons and I think that it is very safe to say that there will most definalty be a 4th Annual 1345 Film Festival next year.

Fans of film as a high art may not find the 1345 Film Festival to their liking, but fans of creativity, spontaneity and whimsy probably will.

The festival, created by siblings Dylan and Bonny Fleming, doesn’t necessarily look for polished, scripted movies shot on high-grade equipment. Instead, films of about 10 minutes or less are often shot with commonly available video-recording equipment, including point-and-shoot cameras and cellphones.

The Flemings’ intention is to give people an excuse to be creative and explore ideas through filmmaking.

“The funny thing about my family and friends, there’s a thing that we say, ‘If I were ever to make a movie, I would do this …,’ Dylan Fleming said. “It’s all just, ‘Express your creativity.’ If you have something that you want to do, go do it.”

The proliferation of basic digital video-recording devices and editing software in the past 10 years has given many people the ability to experiment with short films, and that paved the way for the 1345 festival.

“We’ve got one film that’s 20 seconds long. It’s just this silly thing,” Dylan said. “The accessibility is key. Everybody that has a computer has editing software. There’s no exclusivity to it, it’s just so open.”

That openness results in a variety of experimental films, including some done within hours of the start of the festival.

“Last year, some friends of mine and I started a little project we call ‘shotgun films.’ The night before, we make one or two films. It’s just one last push of creativity,” Dylan said.

Last year’s festival featured one done with toy building blocks titled “Must Hate Squids.”

“We had one friend who had just a very silly idea he wanted to do with some Legos last year, and we set him up in our studio. We helped him edit, and do some sound design,” he said.

In its third year, the festival is moving from its previous location, Bonny Fleming’s driveway on Kansas City Street, to Art Alley in downtown Rapid City. The move takes the festival away from the address that gave it its name, but with more than 100 people in attendance last year, the Flemings decided it was time to step up to a bigger venue.

“We’re pretty excited about getting to be in the alley this year. It’s going to be so cool,” Dylan said.

Being in a public area means that alcohol will not be allowed at the festival, and people have to bring their own chairs.

Dylan isn’t sure how many films will be shown, and entries may be accepted through the day of the event.

“The first year we did it, we sent out this desperate plea in the last week,” he said. At the time, only three films had been submitted, but they ended up showing 23.

For Dylan, much of the excitement of the festival is getting to see the creative pursuits other people want to show off.

“You get to see what people would usually keep to themselves,” he said. “It’s going to be a great time. I’m really, really excited about it this year.”

We headed on down to Art Alley last night to test out the projector, the space, the newly acquired king sized sheet we received from a local downtown hotel… and boy, were we glad we did. Turns out we needed to acquire a second king sized sheet, and we still need to work out a few kinks with our hanging method, but in the end, there was light. And there will be a show this weekend. We’re so excited!

… We walked through the isles of the grocery store this morning as Anna gathered her supplies for her first day of business outside of Asio Studio – She got her lemonade, her cups and some ribbon. The ribbon is to wrap around her stories. That’s right, she’s selling lemonade AND stories. I believe her first one is about a Jelly Fish who runs for president. Come on by sometime in the future and get yourself a glass of cool lemonade for $0.50 or pick up an original story by Anna for $5.00.
She’s awesome!

Well, its Tuesday. That means tomorrow is Wednesday, then it will be Thursday and after that Friday. The day that follows Friday? Yep. Saturday. This Saturday is the Film Festival and in our usual fashion we are doubling the amount of films we have daily.

Dylan and I got called down to Art Alley last week to get our picture taken (not one of my favorite activities) for the Rapid City Journal. Here’s the teaser shot they are running on their website.

I had a great weekend. It was a different kind of weekend filled with peace and friendship. I may post on that later, but I want to spend this time talking about how we kicked off the weekend. Asio packed up early and headed north for First Friday in Spearfish. My cousin Lang Termes was headlining. We stopped off to see Grandpa before we headed downtown to hear Lang. Here are a few shots I took at the concert.

My daughter has informed me that she is going to sell enough lemonade and raise enough money for the two of us to go to Hawaii. Now, I’m fairly certain I am perfectly ok with this plan… so much so that I created this sign for the front of her stand. Now maybe she can talk her Uncle D into making her a sweet store front…

Last March a crew of us met in Bozeman Montana to catch my brother Jake and his wife Jeni in a Pink Floyd tribute band called Pinky and the Floyd. I was pretty sure it was going to be awesome but no one could have predicted how bad ass that show was. I’m suprised the building was still standing after it was all over.

I’ve made it my next goal to bring them to Rapid and already have the ball rolling. I think we can make it work… I hope, anyway, check out this video and see for yourself how super kick ass these guys are:
